It has been in several parades and car shows in thepacific north west. The most coveted years of the "things". Factory 1. 6l/4 cylinder engine and factory 4 speedmanual transmission with 41951 original miles. Meticulously maintained. Recent full tune up, runs and drivesexcellent. Only ethanol free (e0) premium gasoline has ever been used with this engine and it purrs. Starts rightup every time, does 65 mph easily down the freeway, and brakes are excellent so it stops great too. Just put brandnew tires on the original wheels last month, they have less than 10 miles on them (including the spare). Undercarriage was sprayed with a protective rubberized undercoating to resist rust and reduce noise when it wasrepainted 2 years ago in it's original yellow color. Has the rare factory hardtop and removable glass sliding sidewindows. Top comes off easily with 8 bolts and 2 latches. Windows are removable and have nice vinyl storage sleeves(see picture) to store in the trunk when not in use. All 4 doors are removable as well (see pictures). Thewindshield folds down flat, onto the hood (see pictures) which is great for the drive-in! The seats are like new,no rips or tears, and very comfortable. There are 4 seat belts, 2 front, and 2 rear. The rear seats fold downconverting it into a bed. Vehicle comes with it's original steering wheel. The aftermarket steering wheel is muchnicer in that it is padded and easier to drive with. It had a kenwood am/fm cd digital stereo in it (bracket is still installed under the dash) which willcome with the vehicle. Along with the 2 sony speakers and antenna wire (see picture). All lights, turn signalshazards, reverse, etc. Work as they should. All doors, including engine compartment, lock as they should. All brandnew matching authentic cocoa mats (from "the thing shop") for the floor, trunk, and glove box areas. This vehicle is currently licensed with "sp" specialty plates in oregon. Clear title in hand. Original owner'smanual is in the glove box. Top off in thespring and summer, top on for fall and winter. AM/FM

Originally developed for the west german army, the type 181 was also sold to the public, as the kurierwagen in west germany, the trekker (rhd type 182) in the united kingdom, the thing in the united states (1973-74), the safari in mexico and south america, and pescaccia in italy. Civilian sales ended after model year 1980. Manufactured in wolfsburg, west germany (1968-74), hannover, west germany (1974-83), puebla, mexico (1970-80), and jakarta, indonesia (1973-80), the type 181 shared some of its mechanicals with volkswagen's type 1 (beetle) and the pre-1968 volkswagen microbus, and the floorpan of the type1 karmann ghia, and its concept with the company's kã¼belwagen, which had been used by the german military during world war ii. Like the world war ii era type 82 kã¼belwagen, the type 181 used mechanical parts and a rear-engine platform, manual transmission and a flat-4 engine derived from that of the type 1. The floorpans came from the type 1 karmann ghia, which had a wider floorpan than the beetle. Rear swing axle suspension with reduction gearing from the discontinued split-screen volkswagen transporter was used until 1973, when it was replaced with double-jointed axles used by porsche and irs semi-trailing arm setup as used on the 1303 and us-spec beetles. It is powered by a 1600 cc single port flat 4 cylinder engine and 4 speed manual transmission. The top and doors are easily removable and the windshield lays flat for complete open air enjoyment.

For the right person, this is just the thing! But puns aside, the 1973 volkswagen type 181 (aka "thing") is one of those cool factory variations on the beetle that utilized its bulletproof engineering to the max. As a result, these are both highly useful and a rapidly appreciating classic. The thing is very memorable, but was only officially imported for two years. These were originally built purely for function. But just like the original beetle, we found a personality in all of this purpose. This is especially true with one that is painted in the white and blue livery that pays tribute to the limited edition acapulco thing. It's a total presentation that gives this one a terrific sunny day disposition and presentation. Inside, the well-coordinated package continues with a custom full white interior that includes front sport seats that add charm as well as comfort. In fact, speaking of thoughtful, the am/fm/cd stereo is connected to marine-grade speakers. Sure, their white appearance matches with the rest of the interior, but it's also nice to have that extra outdoor confidence in such a sunshine-friendly droptop. And the nautical themed upgrades don't end there. The wood appearance on the steering wheel matches the marine-like the wood slats in the floor for more well-coordinated fun. The real heart of the go anywhere at anytime feeling comes from the familiar air-cooled 1600 cc vw motor. It's no surprise that the thing shares many components with the beatle so it has a similar reputation for a rugged drivetrain and easy maintenance. It feels airy and nimble on the road, but this is truly built to be capable when the pavement ends, too. The thing's higher ground clearance works nicely in conjunction with the weight of the rear-mounted engine to improve traction and ability. The type 181 thing is one of those great cars that has a breezy nature but is backed up by solid engineering. It's an easy to own and easy to love appreciating classic... AM/FM
