The problem with this car was the high seating position of the driver because of the limitations of using the td chassis. A new chassis was designed with the side members further apart and the floor attached to the bottom rather than the top of the frame sections. A prototype was built and shown to the bmc chairman leonard lord. He turned down the idea of producing the new car as he had just signed a deal with donald healey to produce austin-healey cars two weeks before. Falling sales of the traditional mg models caused a change of heart, and the car, initially to be called the ua-series, was brought back. As it was so different from the older mg models it was called the mga, the "first of a new line" to quote the contemporary advertising. There was also a new engine available, therefore the car did not have the originally intended xpag unit but was fitted with the bmc corporate b-series type allowing a lower bonnet line. The mga convertible had no exterior door handles, however the coupe has door handles. It was a body-on-frame design and used the straight-4 "b series" engine from the mg magnette saloon driving the rear wheels through a 4-speed gearbox. Suspension was independent with coil springs and wishbones at the front and a rigid axle with semi-elliptic springs at the rear. Steering was by rack and pinion. The car was available with either wire-spoked or steel-disc road wheels. Engine 1,489 cc (1. 5 l) b-series i4 the 1489 cc engine fitted with twin h4 type su carburettors produced 68 hp (51 kw) at first, but was soon uprated to 72 hp (54 kw). Lockheed hydraulic drum brakes were used on all wheels. A coupé version was also produced. An early open car tested by british magazine the motor in 1955 had a top speed of 97. 8 mph (157. 4 km/h) and could accelerate from 0–60 mph (97 km/h) in 16. 0 seconds. A fuel consumption of 26. 7 miles per imperial gallon (10. 6 l/100 km; 22. 2 mpg-us) was recorded.

Vin: ghn5ub224018g year: 10/70 eng code: 18gk-we-h 3643 commission #: g23 018096 z partial resto-mod daily driver. inland fl car with very little rust. Clean, tight, peppy! New stuff explained and listed below: i'm the third owner and i know its history. I bought it from my orchestra instructor who had it since the late 80s. It was garage kept until 2013, i picked it up in 2015 and fixed it up. Here's what i did to it: rebuilt engine and made it peppy. My normal driving (which is pretty performance oriented) works fine. New driveshaft, brakes (mc, rebuilt calipers, hoses etc etc.), tubeless radials, convertible top with seals and wood strip and trim (has the "good" top framework, pertronix flamethrower, rebuilt fuel pump, all trimmings on engine (belts hoses water pump secondary ignition etc etc...), cored and rebuilt original radiator, new battery, new clutch (quick and nice), new exhaust (header back, nice mild throaty sound under hard acceleration but quiet all other times). interior is mostly new: fresh carpet, an extra set of mats, newly recovered seats with new headrests, new packing strips and good sliders on good floor. Vent windows work fine. Door glass cranks up and down fine. The little rubber piece is missing from the top of the passenger side door but i may have it. Suspension and components are tight with no issues. Hot heat, cable for heater valve works fine with new heater valve. Blower motor works fine, wipers work fine, nice headlights, all lights work etc. No leaks out of this car either. car needs nothing, runs/stops fantastic. All there, mostly all original with original engine and tranny and components. So i'm not in a hurry, and i'd like it to go to an appreciative home where someone will enjoy it as much as i have. It was repainted in the early 80s, and over the years has some surface rust coming up on some of the seams, but i've sealed them so as not to spread, but nothing major. The car has some minor dings here and there from being driven. No accidents, and no big body repairs. Albeit not perfect, but it's a very straight and clean body for it's age, and has been kept well most of its life. i added a waterproof mp3 blootooth stereo that's pretty cool and mostly hidden, as i love my music and news. More pictures, videos, and information upon request. Serious inquiries only. I drive the car back and forth to tampa and orlando so may be available to show it "en route" it gets nearly threefold the mileage than my truck! Feel free to contact me for more details.
