The mercury montclair is a full-size automobile that was produced by mercury from 1955 to 1957, the m-e-l division of ford motor company 1958 to 1960 and by the lincoln mercury division of the ford motor company from 1964 to 1968. The vehicle name was introduced in 1955 and applied to mercury’s premium automobile line. Ford historians are at a loss as to where the name originated; the consensus is that it’s taken from the upper class community of montclair, new jersey. The three-spoke steering wheel has a horn button on each spoke while at the hub is the roman numeral xxv, signifying the 25 years since the first mercury appeared in 1939. With it's ‘very sporty’ fastback styling, it’s difficult to think of a car that comes within a half-inch of 18 feet as sporty but the mercury, with sharply pointed fenders, successfully pulls it off. Atop each front fender, incorporated in the stainless-steel trim, are turn signal marker lights to alert the driver that the signal indicator is activated. Eleven-inch drum brakes at each wheel stand ready to reel in the speeding car on 8. 00x14-inch tires. The mercury rides on a 120-inch wheelbase. At the other end of the big mercury are what appear to be six taillights, the two inboard lights are disguised backup lights.

This car is very reminiscent of the factory a/fx cars of the early '60's... Driven by legends ronnie sox, dyno don nicholson, hayden proffit and others, these 427 powered machines dominated the factory experimental class in 1964... Unlike those strip blazers, this "warmed over"289 powered machine is very streetable with a definite "wow factor". It sounds like a muscle car should, but can be a very reliable daily driver... I'm not a dealer, but a private collector. This comet is titled in my personal name here in the akron, ohio area.

If anyone mistook the comet cyclone for a high style poser, the little mercury carried plenty of punch. In fact, the cars basic design was prover over the highly publicized comet durability run, with a team of comets racking up 100,000 miles on daytona's legendary oval. On america's drag strips, supercharged comet race cars ran in a/fx, the wild stock bodied precursor to aa/fc funny cars, in the hands of sox and martin and jack chrisman, while their ford fairlane stablemates ran in super stock. Of all comet models produced,t he cyclone was quite rare when new with just 7,454 build in all for 1964. However, mercury's racing director fran hernandez overcame the corporate rivalry with massive free press generated from the upstart ford divisions racing success. Ford's hot solid-lifter "k-code" 289 v8 engine was initially advertised by mercury for the 1964 comet, but after tooling was already made and dealer brochures printed, ford limited mercury to the 210-horsepower "d-code" 289. Hernandez instructed his engineers to improvise, so they took the plentiful 600-cfm autolite carburetor from the parts bin and upgraded the mercury 289 into a deeper breathing, hot performing rival to ford's k-code 289, which was limited by its smaller 470-cfm carb. Interestingly, this special and rare mercury only 289 engine was given the "k" code and it slipped right under the noses for ford's top brass! Also known as the "cyclone super" v8, this special "k" 289 turned the lightweight comet into a street and strip terror capable of bumbling many far more powerful "on paper" opponents.
